Memories of a chorister |
|
‘One good thing school taught me was to play cricket. This stood me in good stead to join the local church choir in 1926, which had a fine cricket team. Whether you could sing or not was a secondary consideration! When I left school, one of the men in the choir offered me a job as a driver’s mate in his corn merchant’s business at 10/- a week. The driver was his son, about two years older than I was, and himself an organist and choirmaster, so we gelled straight away. We would stop at any church we passed on our rounds of local farms, to check out the organ. He could play anything from Bach to the latest popular tune of the day and I would pump the organ. I passed my driving test the day after my 17th birthday and the
following day became the proud driver of a lorry with pay of 27/- a week. I
spent a happy three years at the firm before joining my father in his
business, which was making optical elements. Since articles such as these
were essential in the war, we had to leave the coast in 1940 because of the
danger of invasion. We then came to Watford, where I have been ever since.’ |

Thanks to all who have made coffee recently after the 9.30 service on a Sunday. We now need you to sign up again, please! We would also welcome more people (including the gentlemen) to help out - even an occasional offer is gratefully received. The rota lives by the kitchen hatch in the hall, so please don't be shy! |
