Working party The hard-working sixteen who turned out on Saturday last, 10th November, accomplished a huge amount.  If you look around you, you can see that this includes cutting back the vegetation overlooking the footpath on Eastbury Road, clearing gutters and drains, establishing a new shrubbery between the Church and the Hall, white-lining the steps at the North door and removing weeds behind and around the Hall. It was a very good morning's work, helped by Jill's coffee at half time. THANK YOU!

Posada 2007 As in previous years Mary and Joseph (knitted, not real!) will be spending December travelling round Oxhey. It seems a long time ahead, but I need names now so I can concoct a geographically sensible journey ready for Advent Sunday. Please sign the list at the back of church before Nov 17th. Sally

Deanery Synod

Watford Deanery Synod held an OPEN meeting on 11 Oct 2007 at St Luke’s Church. Copies of the minutes are available at the back of church.  We will be sending our parish rep to a meeting in January for those interested in getting The Adult Education Programme started. We were given an audiovisual presentation entitled “Peace needs Bridges not Walls : the Challenges of the Holy Land for Christians Today” by the Rev Canon Dick Lewis and Mrs Helen Harding, who have spent time visiting the Holy Land and befriending Christians there, who sadly now form only 1.4% of the population. These few Christians are doing tremendous work, running schools, a rehabilitation centre in Bethlehem and the Helen Keller School for the Blind.  We should do all we can to support them. He reported that he and Helen are leading their next trip on 8th–17th Feb 2008 and have held some places for Deanery members. Next meeting of Synod Monday, 21 Jan 2008 Anglican Methodist dialogues

Operation Christmas Child If you have put together a shoe box you are invited to a special service at All Saints' Oxhey at 4pm on Sunday 18th November. If you can't make it you can leave any boxes here and I'll arrange collection.

Kenny Smith, the Ohio prisoner on Death Row with whom Jill Higgs corresponds, still sometimes mentions his "friends at St Matthew's" in his letters. He was so cheered by the cards we sent him last year that Jill wonders if anyone would like to give one again. If so, please give it to her by the end of November. (preferably not too big)

Stewardship Sunday 25th November  As part of our Stewardship renewal next Sunday you will be given a sheet as you come into church which lists different ways in which your help is needed to maintain St. Matthew’s, support the present congregation and reach out to others in the local area. If you already help, filling in the form is an opportunity to renew your commitment and it will help the Parish to have a record of who does what. It may be that the list will give you other ideas of ways in which you could help and there’s an ‘I’d like to know more’ option if you’re not sure. There is a sample form on the Notice Board by the font. Please consider this matter prayerfully during the coming week and be sure to hand in a completed form next Sunday. The form is also available on line on our website www.stmatthewsoxhey.org.uk

Whose Job?

This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.  There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.  Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did.  Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.  Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realised that Everybody wouldn’t do it.  It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody, when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.  Jill Greenstreet found this on a tea towel in a bakery in Somerset.
