Bushey Flower Festival 2006 14 - 16 July |
Chancel Flowers by Gladys MacDonald and Pat Cornelius |
As part of St Matthew’s celebration of its 125th year as Oxhey’s Parish Church, we were delighted to host Bushey Flower Festival. The theme of the Festival was Celebrations. Proceeds from the sale of Programmes for the Festival will go to the Arthritis Research Campaign.
Here is a catalogue of the nineteen beautiful flower arrangements:
1. 80 Years of Winnie the Pooh. A A Milne's beloved bear. His first Pooh story was published on Christmas Eve, 1925 in the London Evening News. |
2. A Celebration of our Environment. For the peace and joy of open space, we give thanks. |
3. Golden Wedding. The Golden Anniversary is one of the most celebrated anniversaries and rightly so, spending half a century in love with one person is a wonderful statement about the gift of married life. |
4. Communion. This is the coming together of God's family to share bread and wine; white for purity and red for wine (representing the body and blood of Jesus). |
5. Easter. The sorrow of Good Friday is overcome by the joy of Easter as Christ bursts from the tomb. White flowers moving away from the cross celebrate Jesus' new life. |
6. 250 years of Mozart. Our arrangement is in the style of the 18 th century, to celebrate the birth of possibly the greatest composer the world has known. Mozart began composing and performing while still a child: his last opera "The Magic Flute" was written shortly before he died, aged only 35, his "Requiem" unfinished. |
7. Christmas. The nativity, the birth of Jesus is a time of peace and love, a time for harmony and caring, a time for family and friends to share and a time for children. |
8. Harvest Festival. An arrangement depicting harvest - using all the traditional gold and rust shades associated with this festival time - also including home-grown produce. It is a time to be thankful for all that the earth yields to us. |
9. A cavalcade of Wedding Dresses. My inspiration came from the exhibition of wedding dresses at Bushey Museum. My daughter was married in the cream lace dress in 1992 and my daughter-in-law married in the white dress in 1983. |
10. 35 Years of Bushey Luncheon Club. In recognition of our 35th birthday at the end of March, the arrangement depicts this occasion in the form of a birthday cake. |
11. A New House. A new home brings great joy to the family with many expectations of a new future. |
12. Birth of a New Baby. This arrangement in blue, pink and white flowers celebrates the birth of a new baby and gives thanks for a safe delivery into the world. |
13. Baptism. Baptism celebrates the beginning of our Christian life. |
14. Passing Your Driving Test. A black container represents a tyre or wheel and the red-yellow-green arrangement is for traffic lights. |
15. The Queen's 80 th Birthday. To honour a lady who has given and done so much for our dear country. |
16. St. George's Day and Shakespeare's Birthday. A celebration on April 23rd of St. George's Day (Patron Saint of England) and of Shakespeare's birthday - England's most famous poet and writer. |
17. Winning The Game. However England may have done in the World Cup, for local people what could be more worthy of celebration than Watford F. C. being in the Premiership? Come on you Horns! |
18. 125 Years of St. Matthew's. This depicts 125 years of history at St. Matthew's during which time there have been twelve vicars. |
19. 90th Birthday. This is a celebration to commemorate my mother-in-law's 90th birthday last week - a long and happy life! |
